.:The (seemingly) Neverending Re-write

Ξ April 30th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ greyscale, screenwriting |

In the pursuit of a finished Greyscale production script, we now delve into a fourth rewrite.  It’s too early to say how many drafts there will be before the camera finally recording, but I’m currently hoping for principal photography to begin on August 1st.

There have been quite a few shake-ups in this latest draft from the prior 4, but many thanks to those who have been reading constantly and giving constructive feedback so far.

.:Draft Four & Equipment

Ξ April 22nd, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ greyscale |

Greyscale has now reached its fourth draft. After reading such books as “The Screenwriter’s Bible,” “Save the Cat,” and “Syd Field’s Screenplay,” the screenplay has changed quite a bit from its first draft. It’s amazing to see the developments that the story goes through as I continue to get feedback and then streamline the story into a more dynamic, compelling tale.

Also, a budget is currently being set and here’s the list of both acquired and sought after equipment:

Camera:
Panasonic HVX200
w/16 gb P2 card. (owned)

Support:
Sachtler DV-6SB/2D Aluminum Tripod System (looking to buy used)

Sound:
Sennheiser MKH416 Shotgun mic for outside shots (looking to buy used)
Sennheiser MKH50 Super-Carioid Condenser mic for inside shots (looking to buy used)
Sound Devices 302 portable 3 channel mixer (looking to buy used)

Lights:
Still doing some research, but will buy some fresnels used on eBay.
Lowel DV Creator 1 Three Light Kit (looking to buy)
Arri Compact Fresnel Three Light Kit (looking to buy)

Misc:
Equipment for squibs, some wardrobe and makeup, money for craft services, and other fun things.

Right now I’m holding off on major expenditures until absolutely necessary to see if anyone has any of these items that they aren’t using and wouldn’t mind loaning for a bit to considerably cut down on production cost. So, if you know anybody…

.:Nooma

Ξ April 13th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ misc |

One of the initial influences that was a driving force behind seeing just how effective some good production quality can keep a good message from being lost was the Nooma series. No matter what you think of Rob Bell or the series itself, I found that paying attention to lighting and sound (and shooting on film) beat out a lot of locally made products in what someone might call the “Christian entertainment” industry. Although, it probably isn’t fair to lump the Nooma series in with that crowd since it is far more direct in its goals.

Anyway, check it out and see what you think. I recommend Dust and Kickball the most.

.:Battlefield Principle Photography – Finished

Ξ April 6th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ battlefield, greyscale |

5 months later… principle photography for Battlefield is finally complete. The last 20% was filmed after 4-5 failed attempts (either it was too cold, raining, or schedules wouldn’t match up).

The major downside is that we filmed right after things started turning green. Creativity in shot selection and angles had to be made.

Now comes the interesting dilemma… both Battlefield and Greyscale are clamoring for attention.

With the 2nd draft of Greyscale being finished, I think it’s time for it to cool a bit before I come back to it. Hopefully this will prove for some rough edits of Battlefield Chapters Two through Five.

.:First Draft Done, Second Draft Complete

Ξ April 4th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ greyscale, screenwriting |

The first draft has been complete for a couple weeks, and the feedback has been very interesting. To those who have read but haven’t gotten back to me, it’s not too late. For those of you who haven’t begun to read the first draft, you might want to wait until the second draft is done.

Speaking of the second draft… it’s complete. It’s not done. The re-write is very much different from the re-edits, and I’m thankful for having gone through the difficult and sometimes painful process. I’ve heard that the finished ending of the movie is rarely in the first draft, and I can now see where they’re coming from.

Currently, the second draft is coming in 5 pages leaner, and somehow holds much more character development, a couple more characters, and a much more complex plot. Still not sure how that happened, but it makes me happy that the first draft is ‘de-fluffed.’

I’m still working on editing the second draft, but there will be a call for readers, so keep your eyes peeled.

About

Daros is a rough interpretation of a Hebrew word that means 'Reclaim.'

The purpose of Daros Films is to reclaim the Story that is being told by showing it in other stories. The purpose is to reclaim the quality of a beautiful artform that has become in some regards, a mindless pastime.
